Apple barely unveiled the iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max and people are already abusing them to the max. Of course, this abuse in the video above is actually necessary. It’s an iPhone Xs durability test and you have to know what to expect before deciding to upgrade, since, just like the specs, the price definitely went up.
Watch as iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max are dropped from 6 feet and what exactly will happen when, eventually, your device will take a similar tumble. Unsurprisingly, cracks are inevitable, but the iPhone Xs Max fares a lot better after a 6-foot drop – the back developed plenty of cracks but the front just had the corners smashed a bit, with usability still intact. The smaller device, the iPhone Xs, did not handle a drop as well as the premium option. Even in tumble tests, which are usually gentler, the iPhone Xs Max was the clear winner.
All this should make you seriously consider using a shock-absorbent case and foil for the screen, as a screen replacement will cost $399 and a back replacement is even pricier, at $599.
The only damage you shouldn’t be concerned about is water damage: you can submerge the Xs or the Xs Max in up to 7 feet of water for up to 30 minutes and the devices will work just fine. Or you could drop them in beer, as SquareTrade did.
