Sonos, one of the top developers and manufacturers of wireless home audio products, is soon launching a new, smaller, Bluetooth speaker. According to documents filed with the FCC, the company wants to put out its second portable speaker with a rechargeable battery.
Named as model S27 in the documents, the device is was not officially announced, but getting FCC approval is one of the last steps before the product goes on sale. According to the papers, the new speaker will offer both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) wireless technology.
The images also reveal a wireless charging dock for the device, and that it will use less power than existing Sonos speakers, which suggests it will be smaller than the Sonos Move, for example. Another image showing the label design reveals a cylindrical shape for the device.
The current Sonos Move had the codename S17 in the same FCC documents filed before its launch, so it’s safe to assume the new portable speaker will be its successor and probably be called Move 2. The current Sonos Move is slightly larger than the regular portable speaker, making it uncomfortable to carry around. Perhaps the new generation will be smaller and be more competitively priced.
