According to exclusive reports from VGC, 2K and LEGO will be partnering for a new lineup of sports-related LEGO video games. The partnership is set to span several video games with multiple studios working on different sports.
The first game to release is reportedly a football/soccer game developed by Sumo Digital “followed by an open-world Lego racing game currently in development at WWE 2K22 studio Visual concepts.” The football/soccer game will release in alignment with the FIFA World Cup and the racing game will release in 2023. A third title is also in the works.
The partnership appears to be mutually beneficial to both LEGO and 2K as the former is looking to increase its video game catalogue. LEGO is currently on an expiring exclusivity deal with Warner Bros. TT Games who have produced many of the LEGO Star Wars and RPG-style games. In order to draw appeal to the sports series, there is potential that the LEGO games will also include cross-overs from licenses such as “Marvel, Harry Potter and DC,” all of which have had LEGO-fied versions of games.
For 2K, the company is hoping “to expand its sports offering and sees targeting younger players as one way to do this.” LEGO offers a platform to reach a younger audience but potentially also try new things with their sports video gaming. 2K has made a name for themselves thanks largely to their NBA2K series but a LEGO version may give them the creativity to try new ideas.
