The original Matrix PowerWatch promised to fuel itself entirely by the heat generated by its user but its reviews were a bit lackluster.
Now, the company is back at CES 2019 with the Matrix PowerWatch 2 and some improvements that should put it on the map alongside top smartwatches in 2019.
The PowerWatch 2 keeps the same thermoelectric technology but adds a solar cell around the bezel to power its features – the LCD display, built-in GPS, heart rate monitoring and compass.
Because it’s running on body heat, not a battery, the PowerWatch 2 will also deliver more accurate calorie counts.
As an added bonus, Matrix’s latest smartwatch is also water resistant up to 200 metres, so it can be a great swimming partner.
All of these features and its unique approach to power make it a bit bulky – it’s up to 15 mm in thickness, a bit thicker than its 13.5 mm predecessor.
If you want a smartwatch that doesn’t need charging, you’ll have to pay up for that feature.
The Matrix PowerWatch 2 will begin shipping later this year and goes for $500, with pre-orders set at $200.
