Gamers expected to see Microsoft reveal a new console at E3 2018 and yet the company chose to not make an announcement at the biggest gaming event of the year. However, reports of new hardware have been surfacing for months now and the newest one points towards not one, but two new Microsoft consoles.
According to Thurott, Microsoft is not just building the next Xbox (no surprise there!) but also a second device, codenamed “Scarlett”, which is a streaming box that will work alongside the company’s upcoming game platform. Even more, a game streaming service codenamed Scarlett Cloud has been apparently in development since 2013 and could offer gamers cheaper up-front subscriptions than the Xbox Live, as well as incredible portability.
“This makes streaming the games platform available globally but this also likely means that it can run on any type of device. Of course, Microsoft would love you to buy their hardware but the company’s end-goal is that you can access ‘Xbox’ from any device, anywhere and Scarlett Cloud is looking to deliver on this idea,” explained Thurott.
The same source also detailed how the second Microsoft console, the streaming-focused one, is going to run a portion of the game locally and another portion in Scarlett Cloud, something which could make game streaming much more accessible, without the obvious downsides like a graphics quality loss or ping.
The latest report puts Scarlett ahead of the next Xbox in the development cycle and points towards a 2020 launch for the lower-priced games console. Until then, we’ll just have to settle for the good old Xbox One or, for extra portability, maybe one of the latest gaming smartphones.
