If the name Moment rings a bell but you can’t quite put your finger on why, we should remind you that the company is responsible for selling those lenses that clip on the back of smartphones in order to offer more field-of-view options for both amateur and professional photographers.
The company has already made a name for itself with those lenses but now wants to expand to appeal to vloggers and filmmakers. To do that, they decided to focus on drones, since the machines have become a tool filmmakers have started to rely on quite heavily in the past couple of years.
Moment worked alongside DJI and created an anamorphic lens, mounting system and a couple of filters for the Mavic 2 Pro and the Mavic 2 Zoom drones.
The lens is similar to the cine-focused anamorphic lens the company launched for smartphones back in 2018 but it comes with a few other neat improvements under the hood. To begin with, it was redesigned with “aerospace-grade composites and metals” that make sure it’s not too heavy, so as not to pull the drone down.
Its mounting system allows the users to attach the lens over the camera of the drone. In order not to affect the gimbal in any way, they also added a counterweight to it that can be attached on the opposite side.
If you want to make your shots all fancy-looking, Moment’s got you covered on that as well: it has come up with a set of filters that you can buy separately for the camera.
One of them is an ND (neutral-density) filter that will control exposure and add a cinematic blur effect to your videos while the CPL (circular polarize/linear) filter reduces glare and bounces the light away at different angles. These filters too, are made out of aerospace-grade aluminum, in order to reduce weight.
All of them feature hydrophobic coatings and come with scratch-resistant glass and a ‘shatter-proof construction’.
If you want to use these lenses you have to know that you’ll also need a Moment case on your smartphone in order to do so. If you own an iPhone though, the company created a special case available for the owners of the iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.
It’s made out of a polycarbonate composite and TPU material and altogether it’s only 0.75mm thick and weighs only 12 grams- that’s an important bit to mention because the Moment cases are known to be quite bulky.
The filters will be selling for $99 on Kickstarter, the case for $25 and the anamorphic lens for $199 so if you want to grab any of them, there’s still time for you to back the project.
