Donkey Kong represents a staple franchise for Nintendo, yet over the years, the series has not been given the same spotlight as the game company’s other major IPs. Rumors have it that this may change in the near future.
According to a report by VGC, Donkey Kong may be receiving “Mario” treatment with Nintendo. That is, the character and franchise may be getting games, a theme park, animations, and more.
First, previous reporting by Nintendo Life suggest that a new Donkey Kong game is in the works. Most importantly, this game is being made by the team that made Super Mario Odyssey, the latest game in the Mario franchise. Developed by Nintendo EPD, there are conflicting reports as to whether the game would be 2/2.5D or 3D (in other words, in the design of Donkey Kong Country or Donkey Kong 64, respectively).
While the rumors did say that an announcement at E3 would be made, likely in celebration of Donkey Kong’s 40th Anniversary, no such announcement was made. However, given the large speculation on this topic, it is entirely possible that it will still be announced later.
As for potential other media content for Donkey Kong, Zippo, a credible Nintendo leaker, claims to have heard from their sources that Donkey Kong will also be “getting animation… a big theme park expansion, merchandise, etc. This new game is not just a one off, DK is being taken seriously at the big N again, and that should be good news for fans everywhere.”
VGC reporting verifies some of this, as a potential collaboration with Universal Studios points to a Donkey Kong-themed amusement park in the vein of Super Nintendo World.
All of this would be good news for the franchise and fans.
We will continue to report on this news as things become confirmed or de-confirmed.
