The Wii U and 3DS eras are coming to a close soon.
As posted on a Nintendo Support page, Nintendo will begin phasing out the Nintendo eShops for both the Wii U and the 3DS family of systems.
Starting on May 23rd, 2022, users will no longer be able add funds using credit cards. On August 29th, Nintendo eShop Cards will also not be able to fund accounts on these eShops. Finally, users will be able to purchase or redeem download codes on these systems until late March 2023. To note, all content previously purchases like games or DLC will be able to be redownloaded, receive software updates, and be played online.
One potential issue with the Wii U and 3DS eShop closures is access to classic games. The Virtual Console in particular made titles on previous consoles easily accessible and individually purchasable.
According to Kotaku, Nintendo anticipated this issue. However, their solution appears to be relying on the associated classic games through the Nintendo Switch Online services. There are “no plans to offer classic content in other ways.” This is slightly disappointing as the Virtual Console had a much larger library and games could be purchased individually.
