Nissan has had a good year thanks to its all-electric Leaf vehicles, so there was no reason for the company not to take a confident leap into the luxury market.
The Japanese company unveiled a new electric vehicle concept during the International Auto Show that took place in Detroit this week and introduced it as “an elevated sports sedan”.
The car has dual electric motors with an all-wheel drive. Altogether the motors bring 483 horsepower and 590 pound-feet worth of torque. As far as the battery goes, it’s a 115kwh pack that offers around 380 miles worth of range.
The car is also capable of autonomous driving but Nissan has not released any details concerning the hardware or software that enables that.
The design is sleek and pleasant to look at, the kind we always expect Nissan to deliver and it features the now-familiar ‘floating roof’ the company has been pushing on its most recent sedans and crossovers.
The interior of the car, on the other hand, transports you directly into a Science Fiction movie: the car features layers of screen controls and displays that prioritize information and follow the natural movement of the eye.
Nissan has introduced its “invisible-to-visible” technology at CES last week and it has incorporated it into the new model as well. The tech uses augmented reality to allow both the driver and the passenger a mix of what is visible outside as well as what the sensors see.
The sensors map the space around the car and highlight information like pedestrians and road signs.
All that information is sent to Nissan’s Omni-Snesing cloud, which can subsequently be used by other vehicles that ride through the area.
The most interesting feature of the vehicle has to be what Nissan has dubbed “the Metaverse”. This feature allows the drivers to have the company of 3D AR passenger inside the car.
While it sounds a little weird, we can assume such a feature could actually prove to be pretty useful, especially for new drivers who might want someone more experienced to ride along with and help them out a little.
Also, Nissan suggested that local guides could also be beamed directly into the car and give helpful tips and directions to road trippers. Of course, if you’re lonely, the Metaverse could also bring a friend to keep you company during long trips.
All in all, it looks like Nissan managed to prove everyone so far that sedans can be upgraded to keep in tune with the times, and what an upgrade this is!
