The PlayStation family of studios looks to grow even larger as PlayStation has acquired Bungie!

As announced on PlayStation.Blog, the original developers of Halo and Destiny will officially be under the PlayStation umbrella of studios. According to VGC, the acquisition is worth $3.6 billion.

This acquisition, however, will be a slightly different arrangement than normal. Whereas PlayStation’s previous acquisitions of studios like Housemarque joined the PlayStation Studios first-party group, Bungie “will remain an independent and multi-platform studio and publisher.” Thus, games like Destiny 2 or subsequent entries may continue to be on Xbox consoles as well.

It is likely that other games – perhaps new IPs from Bungie – will be PlayStation exclusive. In a statement provided by CEO of Bungie Pete Parsons, the partnership with Sony allows for creative freedom for the studio to continue developing high end games, with “the most immediate change… an acceleration in hiring talent across the entire studio to support [their] ambitious vision.”

While likely unrelated, PlayStation’s acquisition of Bungie comes on the heels of Xbox’s historic acquisition of Activision Blizzard and Take-Two’s purchase of Zynga. It is clear that major players in the gaming industry are gearing up and conglomerating.
