Oded Balilty, an Israeli documentary photographer with a Pulitzer Prize in his portfolio, did an amazing project to highlight the fact that while photography gear is important, it’s definitely not essential.
The photographer, now working for the Associated Press (AP), just took up DigitalRev’s Cheap Camera Challenge to show what results you can expect from a toy camera.
“Sometimes I see amateur photographers with much better cameras than I have and I’m jealous,” says Balilty in the video above, before adding that “it’s not the gear that you use.”
When he said that, he probably didn’t think he’d trade his Canon 5D Mk III, his most used camera, for a tiny digital camera with just burst mode as a feature.
He also probably didn’t expect it to be bubblegum pink and yellow, with a LEGO-like pattern on top, but he took the challenge like a pro.
Then, he took to the streets of Tel Aviv to shoot some pretty impressive photographs.
Check out the video above to see his Cheap Camera Challenge results, they might help the next time you want to impulse buy yet another camera or lens.
