Is this a race to the top of how fast a phone could charge or a race to the bottom of “this battery is going to fry soon”?
After Realme wowed everyone at the MWC22 congress in Barcelona with their Ultradart 200W fast charging, Oppo upped the ante with a 240W charger.
According to this Oppo demo, this Flash Charge will top off your 4,500 mAh phone from o to 100% in just 9 minutes.
While it’s a beautiful demo, this is still an experimental technology and it’s not clear when you’ll be able to actually buy a phone with 240W SuperVOOC Flash Charge.
Just like previous breakthroughs, like Realme’s 200W FastDart charge, phone makers still have to account for overall battery life and health.
As you know by now from the phone in your pocket, fast charging seriously overheats a device and can even shorten battery lifespan significantly.
It will be interesting to see how new phones will be able to avoid those scenarios.
In the case of Oppo, they use three charge pumps capable of converting power to 10V/24A along with a custom-made control chip that constantly monitors voltage and current to preserve battery health and safety.
