San Francisco Official Is Pushing For Robot Tax

The fear of automation – replacing humans with robots for work – has prompted some developers to create dedicated websites to predict those risks in a certain field. But preparing for a negative outcome isn’t the same as stopping it. So, in the face of an unstoppable technological progress, a San Francisco official believes in finding new ways to make it beneficial for human workers, too. One such solution is the robot tax #machinemagic

Supervisor Jane Kim has created a coalition called the “Jobs of the Future Fund”. This is a fund that supports the humans who lose their jobs in favor of robots. Companies that made the change, opting for machines, are contributing to the fund by paying payroll taxes. In doing so, they help former employees train and learn more so they can land other jobs.

“The changes that automation could bring to our workplaces potentially rival the job losses of the Great Depression,” Edwards said. “This could be the biggest economic challenge our generation will face and it’s critical we build the support among the public, political leaders and employers to get ready for that challenge now.”, said Julie Edwards, a spokesperson for Kim, to Digital Trends.
