Tesla has now went live with its latest Autopilot update and updated its vehicles with the Navigate with Autopilot feature.
The feature is a driver assistance system that, according to the company, will be capable of guiding ‘a car from a highway’s on-ramp to off-ramp, including suggesting and making lane changes, navigating highway interchanges, and taking exits‘. Basically, it’s as close to a self-driving car as we are going to get, for the time being.
The drivers will still need to approve lane changes by tapping the turn signal and keep their eyes on the road. The feature mostly serves as an ‘additional layer of safety that two eyes alone would not have’.

The system uses cameras, radar and sensors to get the information it needs for safe navigation, such as the objects that surround the vehicle. All the data it receives is also sent to the Tesla vision and neural net system so that the company can continue to improve the software.
Autopilot was launched in 2015 and, since then, Tesla states that it has managed to collect more than a billion miles of real-world driving data, all of which has been used to support the Navigate on Autopilot in order to make it safer and more reliable.
The feature will continue to roll out to U.S customers throughout the week.
