Artificial intelligence is conquering new fields every single day. Now, an AI trained in flight combat put a USAF Colonel in a corner after winning in an air combat simulation #machinelearning
Appropriately named ALPHA, the AI showed Col. Gene Lee his strengths in a high-fidelity simulation. While the retired colonel had years of aircraft expertise behind him as well as AI one-on-one exercises, ALPHA managed to get him out of the comfort zone by being “the most aggressive, responsive, dynamic and credible AI I’ve seen to date.”
Psibernetix, Inc. created the AI as an autonomous wingman and the machine took Lee down every single time. Even when researchers gave the colonel the upper hand, limiting the speed, turning and weapons of the AI’s aicraft, it still managed to beat all the other human pilots.
“It knew how to defeat the shot I was taking. It moved instantly between defensive and offensive actions as needed”
Scientists believe ALPHA will be able to control combat UAVs one day, helping humans and learning tactical moves in mid-air. The best thing about it is that the team that made it is convinced it can run even on a Raspberry Pi machine by simply using a system that translated data into key language variables.
