The Last of Us is the swan song of the PS3. Sure, it got a release on the good old PS4, but what is of note today with this game is the fact that all the movie and tv show talks are coming through.
We will get a full-fledged series pend by none other than Craig Mazin and is heading to HBO.
If HBO and Craig Mazin sound familiar, that’s because he’s the creator behind the critically acclaimed, and the reason we still have an HBO subscription, Chernobyl.
And that is not all the good news. The creative director is Neil “My name is so awesome” Druckmann, known for games such: Jak 3, Uncharted 1, 2 and 4, and of course The Last of Us 1 and 2. The rarest case where the designer of the game is now the creative director, and one of the most interesting case studies we will get in the film and game industry.
“From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig, I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us. With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn’t think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television show.” – Neil Druckmann
This might turn out to be one of the most awesome collaborations in recent years, maybe one of the best video game adaptation in tv show format. But… it can be a cautionary tale if you give creative people too much control. Druckmann will be a writer too, and the fact that part of the studio, Naughty Dog, is involved in the production is reassuring. The co-production with Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions… not so much.
“Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus. Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m so honored to do it in partnership with Neil.” – Craig Mazin
The pedigree is remarkable, and the forces involved are notable faces in film in video-games industries. This is the most reassuring fact about this news. A lot of heart and effort went into the creation of the Last of Us games, and this might be the definitive factor that defines this series.
Until we get solid news that the production is well on its way, The Last of Us part 2 is gonna fill the void that the lack of an “in the works” tv show has left in our lives.
