We’ve known for a while that Amazon plans to put ads in Amazon Prime but we still hoped the backlash might convince the company otherwise. Now, we know that’s not the case.
Amazon announced that they’re putting ads in Prime Video shows and movies starting with January 29th, a move that they say will help them provide better content.
“We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership,” the company wrote in an email to subscribers, which The Verge posted in its entirety..
Want to stop ads in your Prime Video? You’ll have to pay an extra $2.99 on your subscription.
“This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time,” Amazon said in their letter to subscribers, who are usually paying $8.99 per month for Prime Video alone.
With the extra fee for no ads tacked on, a simple Amazon Prime Video subscription in the US will cost $11, while Amazon Prime, which includes Prime Video, will jump from $14.99 to $17.99.
Anyone else canceling Amazon Prime and restoring it just for when new The Boys content drops?
