You might have thought that the battle of the retailer giants is coming to an end, what with the silence in recent months, but that’s not happening anytime soon. Walmart just announced voice-enabled shopping.
In yet another jab at Amazon and hoping to compete with Jeff Bezos’ virtual monopoly, Walmart launched Walmart Voice Order for Google devices.
The feature will let owners of Google Home devices or Google-Assistant enabled ones to simply say “Hey Google, talk to Walmart”. Then, they will load their virtual Walmart cart, checkout and wait for the groceries to arrive.
The feature will also learn their preferences, so users won’t have to repeat the specific type of bread or milk they want every time.
“For example, if a customer says “add milk to my cart,” we’ll make sure to add the specific milk the customer buys regularly. Instead of saying “1 gallon of 1% Great Value organic milk,” they’ll simply say one word: milk,” explains Walmart.
In the announcement, a Walmart rep says that Walmart is merely “kicking off the work with Google”.
That could mean the company could be looking to integrate voice commands for shopping using other assistants like Siri, in Walmart’s eternal struggle against Amazon and the dominating Alexa.
