May is really not a good month for Samsung. Chinese giant Huawei has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against the Korean manufacturer, making it the second big lawsuit Samsung has been involved in, including the one with Apple.
It seems that Samsung has infringed on a series of smartphone patents that have to do with the “unlicensed use of fourth-generation (4G) cellular communications technology, operating systems and user interface software in Samsung phones.” In all fairness, Huawei is the owner of over 50,377 patents so the claim is can’t be easily brushed-off.
“Thus far, we have signed cross-licensing agreements with dozens of our competitors. We hope Samsung will respect Huawei’s R&D investment and patents, stop infringing our patents and get the necessary licence from Huawei, and work together with Huawei to jointly drive the industry forward”, stated Ding Jianxing, the president of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Rights Department.
On the other hand, Samsung has kept its head high and responsed in a similar manner. Its chief of intellectual property Ahn Seong-ho said they are considering a countersuit and given the years they have spent in an infringement lawsuit with Apple, this could drag on…
