With the world on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, industries have had to adjust how they’ve approached reaching out to their consumers. The sports industry is no exception to this, but there have already been creative ways to keep people watching the sport without endangering the health and safety of the fans, players, and staff members. After canceling their season, the NBA is planning on hosting a 2K tournament for its players.
According to a report by BleacherReport, the NBA has been looking for ways to provide fans basketball entertainment in lieu of regular season games. The plan the league decided on is holding a players-only NBA 2K tournament that will premiere Friday, April 3rd on major sports network ESPN.
This tournament will feature 16 NBA players, ranging from former League MVP Kevin Durant to 2nd year phenom Trae Young. Seeding for the tournament was based on their 2K rating, not the player’s 2K gaming prowess. Given that NBA players are known to be huge gamers (and often brag about their 2K rating), this should be an exciting tournament to watch.
This move follows NASCAR’s move to broadcast their athletes playing race simulator iRacing to national audiences. Depending on how long it takes for the virus to be contained, more sports leagues may move to this video game model.
