Latest OnePlus Attempt to Hide Selfie Cameras Is Not a Pop-up Mechanism

Notches and hole-punch cameras are everywhere you look but that doesn’t mean companies aren’t still fighting for the ideal of an uninterrupted display. OnePlus, for example, is making its last (latest?) attempt to hide the selfie camera. And no, they’re not talking pop-up mechanisms.

Or under-display cameras. It’s true that manufacturers like Xiaomi and ZTE have tried their hand at phones with under-display cameras but the tech still has a way to go until it becomes reliable and gains consumers’ confidence.

Pop-up cameras from tech smartphone makers like Oppo, Vivo, and Redmi had a little bit more success although those came with their own caveats.

So OnePlus decided to carve its own path with a patent that suggests hiding the selfie camera in the… top bezel.

For that to happen you need a “high screen-to-body ratio” and a phone like that could offer “low production cost, high yield, and high product reliability.

An invisible camera like that could give consumers the futuristic, beautiful phone display they’ve dreamed of but, let’s not forget, this is just a patent.

There’s no guarantee OnePlus will follow through. What is a certainty is we won’t see this development in the OnePlus 9 coming next.
