Reddit’s WallStreetBets community, the one responsible for this year’s skyrocketing jump in GameStop stock, has just adopted 3.500 gorillas in 6 days.
Tara Stoinski, the Director of Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, has expressed her gratitude to the Reddit community for the adoptions. “I was just made aware that you have been adopting gorillas through our website,” she said in the subreddit video that has been upvoted more than 160.000 times. “I just wanted to say thank you so much for this incredible support.”
The charity was created by conservationist Dr. Dian Fossey in 1978 with the purpose of financing anti-poaching patrols to prevent further poaching of the mountain gorillas and was the most prominent recipient of the Redditors’ gift, with more than $350.000 in donations.
The slogan “apes together strong” is a reference to the movie “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and, according to the KnowYourMeme website, WSB users refer to each other as “apes” as a way to suggest that they can overcome hedge funds and corporations by banding and working together.
Reddit has a history of doing similar good deeds. One such user decided to spend his profits from the GME stock surge on Nintendo Switch consoles and games which he then donated to the Children’s Minnesota Hospital while other users donated crayon boxes to local schools. But the subreddit’s latest group effort came at just the right moment for this animal protection organization.
The coronavirus pandemic has made it difficult for researchers and conservationists to gather the necessary operational costs to continue their activity at the required capacity and much too easy for poachers to take advantage of the reduced activity and staff to restart massive illegal hunting of protected species.
