Facebook Set To Disable Profile Picture Download For Strangers

Facebook will take extra measures to make sure profile photos aren’t used for evil purposes by strangers. In India, users will get the chance to guard their profile pictures by disabling download or screenshot for those who aren’t their friends #securemagic

The Social Media giant will develop new tools to guard Indian users’ profile pictures. “In our research with people and safety organizations in India, we’ve heard that some women choose not to share profile pictures that include their faces anywhere on the internet because they’re concerned about what may happen to their photos”, explained the company.  To fight that reticence, Facebook is going to increase the platform’s security.

Users will have the option to enable “profile picture guard”. By doing so, strangers will no longer have the possibility of downloading, sharing or sending profile pictures (that aren’t of their friends) in Facebook messages. They will also find it impossible to tag themselves or others in said profile pictures. How about screenshots? Facebook thought of that also and has prevented this from happening on Android devices, so far.

Protected pictures will be easily noticed by an added shield symbol at the bottom of the picture and a new blue border. Plus, those who want to take an extra precaution will be able to overlay Indian textile designs, which will hide the pictures further.

Right now, this experiment is just that – a trial run. But Facebook doesn’t exclude expanding the practice internationally: “Based on what we learn from our experience in India, we hope to expand to other countries soon”.
