Back in June, Head of PlayStation Jim Ryan spoke to Axios about the potential for some sort of mobile expansion of the PlayStation brand.
As VGC reports, PlayStation has hired former Apple employee Nicola Sebastiani to potentially lead their new mobile branch. Sebastiani’s hire was found on his LinkedIn profile.
Sebastiani formerly worked with Apple for both their App Store and Apple Arcade service. In the former role, he was the Head of Games Business Management whereas in the second role, he worked as Head of Content.
However, there is still little to no information on when or how PlayStation mobile services will work. It appears that the idea is to bring the first-party IPs to the platform but perhaps not the game itself. As Ryan stated in a corporate meeting, “PlayStation has a huge catalogue of diverse first-party IP that can transition to smartphone gaming and complement our AAA games or live service games.”
The project may still be a couple years out, but with Sebastiani’s experience, we could see some sort of mobile platform business or subscription-style services for the PlayStation mobile expansion. Beyond his experience, that is how the industry is trending regardless.
