In an effort to bring more of its silicon design in-house, Apple has bought a portion of chip supplier Dialog Semiconductor Plc, which means that Apple will further expand its chip operations in Europe and also that the company will gain 300 engineers from the company and take control over some of Dialog’s assets.
An additional $300 million is going towards products from Dialog over the next three years but in spite of Apple buying around 16% of Dialog’s workforce, the company states that they will continue to deliver chips to all their other customers regardless, but with an added focus on the automotive and internet-of-things markets.
This is by far Apple’s largest acquisition ever, in terms of headcount.
Apple is expected to release a VR headset in the near future so working on power management and better chips is the first step the company has to take in order to stay at the top of the game. Apple is betting a lot on wireless, high performance hardware and it’s understandable they are aiming towards more powerful products made in-house, to fit the specific demands of their devices.
The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2019 but there’s still a number of steps to be taken until all the paperwork is signed. We will keep you updated on the story, as it happens.
