Samsung gave us a peek at the company’s Exynos processor chip that will be powering up the Samsung phones next year.
The Exynos 9820 comes with a dedicated AI engine and promises a 15% to 20% performance boost over the previous processor chip.
The star of the show is the NPU (Neural Processing Unit) with the SoC having a dedicated component for machine learning tasks. This means that the AI can do more processing without having to send its data over to the cloud in order to achieve optimal performance. NPUs often help with tasks like image or voice recognition, augmented reality and other similar things.
While we may normally encounter eight separate CPU cores, the Exynos 9820 will help the battery by only using the high-power cores when the apps are at their peak.
The Exynos 9820 also happens to be Samsung’s first 8nm chip, which involves smaller transistors on the silicon to aid performance.
According to Samsung, the chip will go into mass production by the end of this year.
