Perhaps you haven’t heard about the Photonics Crystal Corporation because neither have we: the company is relatively unknown outside China but they will be making an appearance at the CES this year where they will unveil a transparent display that, they claim, can bring AR applications to life.

The display, called the NanoAR, shouldn’t be possible since a fully transparent media is not capable of displaying an image, but in spite of this the company claims to have found to make it work.

Photonics Crystal states that it invented an optical chip technology that can control “the light from the projectors without disturbing the light from the other side.”

The technology could be used to create transparent digital signage, glasses-free 3D displays and more.

During the CES, the company will be showcasing a demo of their Holographic Smart Display called the Holobot, which is basically a “virtual holographic assistant with transparent imagery in a compact form factor.”

Photonics Crystal states that their patented displays are 85% transparent while the amount of haze created in the transparency is below 2%.

If the technology proves itself to be feasible, it looks like we might be turning the holographic advertisement-filled cities of Blade Runner into a reality after all.
