Facebook has now begun rolling out a few updates to improve memorialized accounts – the accounts of people who have passed away but whose profiles remain active.
It was back in 2015 that Facebook allows the users to assign a friend or a relative as a ‘legacy contact’ – someone who will be responsible with maintaining their account after they die. While under 18’s cannot have a legacy contact, a child’s parents can request to become a legacy contact if the child has passed away.
One of the updates includes a dedicated tab for tributes, where friends and family can share stories or memories of the person they lost, which basically allows the person’s timeline to stay as active as it was before.
The legacy contacts are now able to keep the tributes tab in check – they can limit who can see it or post, they can delete posts if they find it necessary and change profile and cover photos as well as respond to friend requests. The only things they can’t do is read the private messages and remove or add new friends.
Of course, Facebook is also taking steps to ensure the memorialized profiles will not be “showing up in places that might cause distress, like recommending that person be invited to events or sending a birthday reminder to their friends”, by making some additional improvements to the AI algorithms.
