Because it’s Valentine’s Day but also 2019, another year that promises to bring us closer to AI sentience, Search Laboratory wanted to give artificial intelligence a shot at love too.
That is how we ended up with Downtiration, Tender Love, the world’s very first AI love song.
To achieve that, Search Laboratory used its Recurrent Neural Network system, which recognizes patterns in the large quantities of data it’s being fed. Google’s machine learning software TensorFlowwas also essential in the process.
Judging by the end result, we still have a long way to go before AI will understand, even remotely, what love is – for some reason its algorithms suggest it has something to do with curtains.
How did it all come to happen? In a nutshell, the software was handed 999 bits and snippets from the greatest love songs in the world and subsequently created its own. Probably the most moving line in the song is “I ask the curtains, it wasn’t fake“, but maybe that’s just me – I get emotional easily.
Search Laboratory actually went to work and got a guitar player and a vocalist to sing the song and do the lyrics justice.
You can listen to it in the video below and maybe sing it to your own Valentine today as well, as a token of your love.
