See How The Android P New Gesture Controls Work

Ready to try Android P’s new gesture controls for less tapping, more happening?

At I/O 2018, Google presented Slices and Actions, the two new ways to interact with your smartphone screen.

Slices are smart snippets, appearing as photos or a slider, that will let you access app functions without having to open the app.

For example, if you search for Lyft on your phone, next to the app you’ll see a list of common actions and even a tap button to get a ride.

At the moment, Android P Slices will only work for the search function but Google plans to extend their functionality.

The second new gesture control is Actions, which use the way you previously interacted with the phone to predict future gestures. They will pop up on your home screen reminding you of your regular workout and even suggest an app like Spotify whenever you plug in your headphones.

The Android P beta is open right now if you want to try Slices and Actions but first check out if your phone is compatible:

  • Pixel 2 / Pixel 2 XL
  • Pixel / Pixel XL
  • Essential Phone
  • Sony Xperia XZ2
  • Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S
  • Nokia 7 Plus
  • Oppo R15 Pro
  • Vivo X21

In a little while, OnePlus 6 will also join the list of beta partner devices, so that’s one more option. To join, just visit the Android developer page, scroll to your phone model and click the “Get the beta” link.

Just make sure to back up your data first!
