Apple’s Reportedly Games Subscription Service Sends Gamestop Stock Tumbling

app store games

Here’s an unexpected report: Apple is working on a games subscription service similar to Steam or Humble Bundle.

The news comes from Cheddar, which chose to keep its sources anonymous.

While there aren’t many other details, the outlet also claims that Apple will act not just as a platform owner but also as a publisher. That means the company will invest financial resources in production and marketing for various studios who will handle the development of the games for the platform.

As for the games themselves, the outlet said that they would be bundled and sold as a subscription, which sounds similar to services like Humble Bundle (on Steam, games are purchased separately).

Even though the report is not backed up by any named sources, it shouldn’t be a surprise if it turns out to be true.

Apple did highlight subscriptions as part of their strategy for growth and, so far at least, the company did not venture into the video game industry.

The report also sent ripples across the industry, with giant Gamestop seeing its stock take a 5.7 percent tumble immediately after publication. Fortunately for its investors, it has bounced back since.
