Coca Cola’s Wannabe Futuristic New Flavor Is ‘Co-Created’ with AI

Coca Cola has a new Y3000 flavor and, to promote it, they’re dipping into the trend of AI image generators to create “futuristic” visuals.

The brand released a companion app for the Cola Y3000 Zero Sugar flavor that will use Stable Diffusion, a popular AI image generator, to turn your photos into colorful visions of the future.

While the packaging does indeed look pretty, it’s hard not to see the Y2K influence in it – and the supposed-futuristic images created by Stable Diffusion look a lot like a trend from 2015, not the year 3000.

Anyone familiar with artists like Ines Alpha, an AR artist and a popular Snapchat and Instagram filter creator, will recognize the pink-blue-ish ethereal style, which somehow feels more derivative rather than bold.

Still, considering AI image generators are built on top of millions of scraped or stolen artworks, it’s no wonder the algorithms can’t spit out something truly unique.

The Y3000 Coca Cola campaign lets you scan a QR code found on the cans. You’ll be directed to the Coca-Cola Creations Hub, where you can take photos and filter them through the Y3000 AI Cam powered by Stable Diffusion.

“We hope that Coca‑Cola will still be as relevant and refreshing in the year 3000 as it is today, so we challenged ourselves to explore the concept of what a Coke from the future might taste like—and what kind of experiences would a Coke from the future unlock?” Oana Vlad, Coke’s senior director of global strategy, said in a press release.

The Coca-Cola Y3000 Zero Sugar flavor was also “co-created with human and artificial intelligence by understanding how fans envision the future through emotions, aspirations, colors, flavors and more,” according to the same release.

If you’re curious about the Y3000 flavor, this YouTuber tried it and called it “decent”.
