Not once, not twice but multiple times the authorities have tried to stop Florida Man in this case but he persevered.
Famous Florida Man Reza Baluchi keeps trying to cross bodies of water in a hamster wheel of his own engineering, a contraption he calls a “hydro pod”. Obviously, the US Coast Guard is not happy with it and keep stopping him from embarking upon grander and grander voyages.
This time, he tried to cross the Atlantic in his homemade vessel during Hurricane Franklin. On August 26, the US Coast Guard found him in the Hydro Pod about 70 miles from Tybee Island in Georgia, saying he was planning to reach London this way.
“Based on the condition of the vessel – which was afloat as a result of wiring and buoys – USCG officers determined Baluchi was conducting a manifestly unsafe voyage”, wrote the authorities in their complaint.
The best part?
Not only did he give the Coast Guard a headache, he also threatened to kill himself with a knife in case someone tried to apprehend him and claimed he had a bomb on board the hamster wheel.
Thanks to these shenanigans, he is now facing federal charges.
In the case linked above you can also read about Baluchi’s previous nautical adventures in 2014, 2016 and 2021.
If you have the time, Vice’s interview with Reza Baluchi, nicknamed “Captain Bubble”, is a wild ride.
