In April, GoPro was announcing its first consumer-friendly 360-degree action camera. Back then, we had an idea about the overall look and general features, but no clue how it would pan out from a consumption POV. Now, the company has launched officially Omni and cleared out everything #actionmagic
For $4.999, you get the cube shaped rig, six GoPro Hero4 cameras and software solution to capture content in VR and post-process it. The rig allows perfect alignment and syncing between cameras, making sure all of them record video simultaneously, at up to 8K resolution. To process video from all six cams, you needed a lot of power. Thankfully, they solved the issue by using a single V-block battery, instead of multiple ones. This way, GoPro Omni can save the space for cooling.
The heating distribution is one of the main problems in such cameras. It’s no wonder GoPro spent some time figuring out a way to keep the cameras at normal temperature levels, resorting to an aluminum frame in the end.
The only nagging thing about the GoPro Omni? The six SD cards you’ll have to take care of from beginning to end. All of them need to charged full before shooting and the data stored downloaded carefully… a.k.a. lose one SD card and your day is over.
