This Heated Jacket For Winter Wins Topshop Competition

Fashion retailers are starting to take wearables seriously, with Topshop’s latest competition being the best example of that. Top Pitch recruited three teams for a summer boot camp where they had to create designs for wearables with potential commercial success. The Crated’s heated garment won the competition #objectmagic

Maddy Maxey from the Brooklyn design consultancy The Crated designed a blazer that heats up in cold weather. In other words, instead of bundling up once the temperatures go below 0 degrees Celsius, you could simply slip this jacket on and be done with it. Maxey used their flexible conductive ink and special material called INTELiTEX to make it happen and soon, Topshop should make it a market reality.

Designers and journalists mentored the three participants and Maxey’s design convinced the jury in the end. That said, the entrepreneur doesn’t think wearables should be constructed from scratch. Instead, she believes embedding technology into the existent fabric is the way to go. With Maxey leading the design effort and Topshop’s support, we might see heated jackets hitting stores this cold season or the next.
