iOS 16 and iPhones running it are going to get a novel feature later this year called ‘Clean Energy Charging’.
This is a totally new option not even seen in the most avant-garde Android phones but, based on Apple’s previous carbon footprint reduction efforts, it does make some sense.
MacRumors spotted the iOS 16 Clean Energy Charging mention in the footnotes of the Apple press release announcing the iOS 16 launch.
“Live Activities will make it even easier to stay on top of things happening in real time, right from the Lock Screen, such as a sports game, ride-share, or food delivery order, and Clean Energy Charging aims to decrease the carbon footprint of the iPhone by optimizing charging times for when the grid is using cleaner energy sources,” explains Apple.
Our hope is the company will release more details about the functionality, since optimizing for this type of charging sounds like a hassle.
For one, the big question is how iPhones with Clean Energy Charging will find out that information, since electric providers aren’t always transparent with that information and energy demands vary wildly from hour to hour.
