Nintendo largely dominated the video game sales charts in July 2021, thanks so some new releases and old classics.
According to Twitter thread by executive director and advisor at the NPD Group Mat Piscatella (via Nintendo Life), Nintendo exclusive games held eight of the top 10 spots. These include the newest release, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD and Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, as well as some games that have been out for a while like the evergreen Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at #4 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at #17.
It should be noted that for Nintendo sales, the numbers only include physical sales and not digital.
Other things to note from Piscatella’s expansive report is that spending on gaming has been up since compared to a year ago, with part of the increase thanks to a growth of hardware sales by 98% when compared to July 2020. When it comes to the hardware, “PlayStation 5 led the hardware market in dollar sales for the month of July, while Nintendo Switch once again led in unit sales… [and] is the best-selling video game hardware year-to-date in both unit and dollar sales.”
When it comes to software, Skyward Sword HD is the first Nintendo title to top the charts since February when Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury released (the game is currently #14).
