Leica has launched the full-frame L-mount lens APO-Summicron-SL 50mm f/2, at the price of $4,495.
The new lens “sets an even higher benchmark for the Summicron-SL family” and integrates twelve elements in 10 groups to provide “natural skin tones, smooth bokeh, outstanding contrast and consistent sharpness from corner-to-corner”.
Also, it offers distortion-free images, keeping chromatic aberrations in check with the help of apochromatic corrections (hence the APO). This way, the lens “ensures that all colors of the light spectrum are accurately passed through the lens and fall on the same focused point on the camera’s sensor”.
Fast powerful stepper motors, with “Dual Syncro Drive” (DSD), help the autofocus to provide focus from minimum focus distance to infinity in less than a second. Therefore, even if the subjects are moving, it still gets the job done. The lens also integrates a new focus ring construction, among other exciting features.
The APO-Summicron-SL 50 mm f/2 ASPH is available for pre-order now for $4,495, but it could probably pass any test you could throw at it, knowing how Leica rolls.
