The future of gardening is here – or at least a very cool new plant you can add to your garden.
Light Bio, a much hyped startup, announced that they’re bringing their glow-in-the-dark plants to the US.
Bioluminescent petunias are their first launch, beautiful annual flowers who will emit an ethereal green glow at night. Dubbed Firefly Petunias, they are the first commercially available bioluminescent plants.
Light Bio’s flowers were created by genetically modifying petunias, enhancing genes isolated from luminous mushrooms.
After getting a swathe of press coverage, Light Bio’s petunias now also have USDA approval for sale.
The agency investigated the petunias to see if they had an increased plant pest risk but found it the same as regular cultivated petunia.
If you want to add one to your garden, you can pre-order your own for $29, with shipments set for this spring.
