By next year, Subaru’s autonomous vehicles will take decisions in traffic congestion situations.
According to the company, in 2017 new cars will benefit from Eyesight, ttheir camera-based safety system, and a traffic jam assist function. This will allow cars to react as humans do in traffic jams – stop and start automatically and steer the wheel around curves. Until then, Subaru’s systems require the drivers’ help to steer and to accelerate after the car has come to a stop. The new traffic function will work at speeds up to 40 mph.
In 2020, Subaru hopes to introduce a semiautonomous driving function for highways that would incorporate automated lane changing and steering. The feature implies radar sensors and GPS mapping with Eyesight.
These will be some exciting couple of years!
