Pony.ai Brings Self-Driving Cars In China For The First Time

Pony.ai, a company with headquarters in Fremont, California, and Guangzhou, China, launched the first ever self-driving car fleet for ride-sharing in China! #automagic

Recently, people from Nansha, Guangzhou had the chance to ride-share on a 1.7 mile route using 6 self-driving vehicles. Four Lincoln MKZs and two GAC Chuanqis compact SUVs drove back and forth using driverless technology with excited passengers who got to experience self-driving cars alongside the Pony.ai engineers.

The event comes after months of testing in which the self-driving car fleet covered thousands of kilometers in multiple scenarios, from congested city streets to chaotic roads and bad weather.

It’s a historic moment that marks the first time regular Chinese citizens experienced self-driving technology first-hand! Not only that but today, there was also a big announcement revealing a strategic partnership between Pony.ai and the GAC Group, the second-largest automaker in China.

“The current global automotive industry is in the process of undergoing profound change. Automotive products are rapidly becoming smarter, more connected, and more lightweight while harnessing innovations in alternative energy,” said Xingya Feng, president of GAC Group.
