As developments in the artificial intelligence area pop up almost every day now, it’s no wonder world leaders are starting to pay attention more to their potential. Russian president Vladimir Putin is one of them, ready to bet that the nation to have the upper hand in AI research will one day rule the world #machinemagic
Putin has stated that “artificial intelligence is the future, not only for Russia, but for all humankind”, according to RT. “It comes with colossal opportunities, but also threats that are difficult to predict. Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world.”
So far, China and US are leading the race in artificial intelligence research. China is so confident in its progress, that it has openly declared its ambition to be the nation leading those efforts by 2030. U.S. companies are not intimidated by those claims though, investing in AIs that can be creative, resourceful and more effective than their human counterparts.
Their skills are crucial in many areas, especially medical research and warfare. World leaders, Putin included, are aware of its use in developing cyber weapons and controlling autonomous vehicles. That said, the Russian president claims to be willing to share that power, if the decision were his to make one day: “If we become leaders in this area, we will share this know-how with entire world, the same way we share our nuclear technologies today.”
