RED Is Announcing A Completely New Product This July 6

We know Fourth of July is in a couple of days, but whatever you do next week, make sure you’re online. RED has just teased about an upcoming announcement for a new product on July 6th #realitymagic

No Film School stumbled upon their post on a forum. The message was clear, folks: “You need to be online. You need to tell everyone you know to be online. Have your credit card ready.” Excited, yet? Let us drop another hint: “This is a new product category. It does not impact your RED camera. “

So, the company has worked on something completely different than what we’ve come to expect from them. Their latest published patents point towards something with cell phone functionality. It’s unlikely that they’re jumping into smartphone territory. Instead, they’ll more likely go where video producers are flocking already: virtual reality.

A VR camera suits RED’s latest ideas, like cellular functionality (live-streaming, anyone?) and a variety of resolutions. That’s only speculation at the moment, though. We’ll have to wait until new Thursday to see what it’s been cooking up.
