Xiaomi made a bold claim: you will soon charge your phone from a distance, without using any pad or charging station.
Then, Lenovo followed suit, showcasing another amazing air-to-air charging concept!
But first, let’s see Xiaomi’s premiere.
The tech Xiaomi announced is called Mi Air Charge Technology and it will let everyone enter “a true wireless charging era”, in which devices charge purely through the air.
How does it work?
The Mi Air Charge uses a charging station fitted with a phase control array made of 144 antennas. On the phone side, the future Xiaomi phones will have a miniature antenna array picking up those millimeter waves from the charging station and converting them into electrical energy.
Right now, the company says Mi Air Charge can do 5W of remote charging for a single phone in a radius of several meters, even if there are physical obstacles in the way.
Even more, multiple devices can be charged at the same time.
While this new air-to-air charging likely won’t show up in 2021 (and we don’t know how much it will cost), Xiaomi is teasing huuuuge potential!
“Soon our living room devices, including speakers, desk lamps, and other small smart home products, will all be built upon a wireless power supply design, completely free of wires, making our living rooms truly wireless,” the company said on its blog.
