Just last month, Apple announced they were going to launch an intelligent home speaker, HomePod. Like Amazon’s Echo and Google Home, it was going to be powered by the company’s own digital assistant, catering to every single need of its users. Moreover, it would bring spatial awareness to the mix and offer unprecedented audio quality. Even so, we’re not sure how much Apple can penetrate the current market, dominated by Amazon and Google. And if that prospect is pretty shaky, imagine how it is the idea of Samsung launching their own intelligent speaker. Yet, they will, according to close sources #objectmagic
The Wall Street Journal reported than Samsung was indeed prepping a voice-activated speaker which would come with their one and only Bixby. Although it’s the first time we hear about the project, it’s apparently not a whim of the South Korean manufacturer. In fact, the manufacturer has been apparently thinking about one for the last year.
Code-named “Vega”, the gadget doesn’t have a release date or even the spec sheet ready at this point. Nevertheless, Samsung is going through with its plan, just after its rival announced their own home speaker. Coincidence? You tell us.
Of course, Samsung has all the means of making their version of Echo a reality. But does that mean they can steal a significant bit of the market share? After all, the Echo speaker holds 70% of it, while Google Home comes immediately after, with 24%.
They’ll have to pull off something close to a miracle to turn the numbers in their favor. Especially since voice recognition for English speakers could still be a problem; remember, Bixby started supporting this feature just a couple of weeks ago.
