Great Britain is continuing its plans of smartifying streets, cars and traffic monitoring systems by testing 10 self-driving trucks later this year.
In an effort to cut traffic congestion, UK’s chancellor George Osborne will approve the funding of driverless technology for 10 lorries that will take on the quieter part of the M6 motorway (near Carlisle). These will be driven a few meters apart, in a row.
As far as automotive technology goes, UK’s government has been open in recent years to testing of LTE, Wi-Fi, LTE-V and DSRC. Jaguar Land Rover, Huawei and Vodafone have partnered up with various UK universities to speed up this process.
Meanwhile, in West Yorkshire, infrared cameras have started monitoring traffic and are introducing variable speed limits (where there’s necessary) to help drivers spend as little time as possible on the road.
