PC: Nintendo

The Game Awards just became a little more exciting. According to the official Nintendo Twitter account, the 8th Smash Ultimate DLC character will be announced tonight sometime during the Game Awards.

Announcing a DLC fighter at The Game Awards is not necessarily surprising for Nintendo. The Game Awards is a common venue for developers to show trailers of games yet to come and announce new IPs. Additionally, in 2018, Nintendo surprised fans when they announced that Joker from Persona 5 would be the first DLC fighter added to Smash Ultimate.

However, while the Joker announcement was a pleasant surprise, both as an unexpected fighter and announced at an unexpected venue, the stakes are certainly higher for the character announced tonight. Not only have characters iconic characters like Joker, Minecraft Steve, and Banjo & Kazooie already joined the battle, but Nintendo has also directed fans to tonight’s Game Awards specifically for a Smash Ultimate DLC announcement.

This year’s Game Awards will certainly be different than most, given the current state of the pandemic. For starters, The Game Awards will be set virtually this year. Additionally, it is likely that the voting and awarding will be somewhat influenced by how gaming changed during our largely socially distant year. I imagine games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, and Among Us will draw a large number of votes given just how important they were for bringing communities together.
