I don’t know about you but I squeaked when I heard that Sony WH-1000XM4 is not only happening but that the info about the headphones has leaked!
I won’t lie – as I’m writing this piece, I am listening to Sam Smith on my own pair of WH-1000XM2 😉 There’s no doubt in my mind that these are some of the best wireless headphones around after using them for years now.
Unfortunately, Sony stayed silent on the subject for 2 years now, as the third pair in the series came out in 2018. Well, no more.
A teardown of the Sony Headphones Connect APK (Android Application Package) has pointed out that the fourth iteration is worth the wait.
The most exciting feature the headphones will offer with the app in tow is “Smart Talking”. This will make the headphones detect a voice and automatically enable ambient sound, so you can focus on it without removing your earcups or modifying settings in the app.
But what if you’re not interested in hearing that voice? The sensitivity will be adjustable, either from the app or from the NC/Ambient button on the right earcup. Also, you’ll be able to go back to noise-canceling mode after a pre-set period.
Another feature that is long overdue is the ability to connect the headphones to multiple devices and switch from one to another seamlessly. This will finally become available with the WH-1000XM4.
Finally, Sony is connecting Google Maps to its app, so the headphones will know automatically where you are and what kind of audio setting you need.
Smart, heh? Just as smart as the improved upscaling sound this pair will bring. DSEE Extreme will come to the headphones, an improvement from the current DSEE HX the Sony WH-1000XM3 use for audio upscaling.
Unfortunately for some of you (me included), the headphones are said to come in black, silver and white – no sign of the gold version (the one I’m also currently sporting.)
