Tesla Launches Solar Roof V3

Soon after it released its Q3 earnings report, Tesla has announced the commercial launch of its new Solar Roof product. Already at its third version, the Solar Roof is available on Tesla’s website.

The idea behind it is essentially solar panels incorporated in roofing tiles, and the companies aim is to set the pricing to compete with what a regular roof plus a conventional solar panel would cost.

The whole system would be able to power your entire house via a Tesla Powerwall. Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, argues that for people who have 10 or more years left on their current roof it makes more sense to install a traditional solar panel.

The Tesla Solar Roof comes with a 25-year warranty, close to legacy roofing systems. The company also plans to offer the system to traditional roofing companies as part of a “Tesla certified installer” program.

Installation for the Tesla Solar Roof on an average-sized American home shouldn’t take more than 8 hours. “You leave your home for work for the day, and by the time you get back, you have solar power,” Elon Musk noted.

Tesla admitted the solar tiles are not as efficient converting sunlight into electricity individually as a solar panel is, but as a whole, because they cover a larger area, they can easily replace traditional solar panels.

For now, the Solar Roof tiles are only available in a single, dark asphaltlike colorway, but Tesla plans to launch other versions to mimic clay tile roofs and French slate roofs.
