Natural light is the best light in photography if you know how to channel it. Otherwise, you are stuck with harsh shadows and weird skin tones. Here are some tips that will surely improve your indoor photo technique:

  • Think about the tone of the photos you want to take. For something dramatic and moody, shadows will helps. For a soft touch, use filtered light through windows and curtains. Either way, be aware of how light falls in any given room during the day.
  • Choose a low aperture number. The lower the f number is, the wider your aperture is, letting you capture as much light as possible. Shoot with Aperture Priority mode.
  • Use a reflector to bounce the light back on the subject.
  • Another way to control the light is by using a light box – you can do one yourself, following a tutorial such as the one here.
  • Change the White Balance. For beautiful skin tones, take it from Auto to Daylight; for warmer tones, put it on Cloudy – switch and take several pictures until you’re comfortable with the result.
